Hartley revved up and ready to race
Brendon Hartley flew back from Spain yesterday to more hours behind the wheel of the Formula 1 simulator in England.
The Palmerston North driver is one of two test-reserve drivers for the Red Bull and Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula 1 teams, but was not in Melbourne on Sunday for the Australian Grand Prix.
That role on the subs bench was filled by the other 20-year-old Red Bull Junior Team driver, West Australian Daniel Ricciardo, last year's British F3 champion.
Ricciardo will also be the reserve at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur next Sunday. Hartley was the reserve for the opening Formula 1 round in Bahrain and will be on duty two weeks later in round four at Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix.
During a grand prix weekend, the Red Bull reserve drivers are not allowed to test the cars. They do public relations tasks for Red Bull and attend all the briefings, debriefs and driver meetings.
When he is not involved with his World Series Renault team, Tech 1 Racing from Toulouse, France, or on standby for Formula 1, he is usually on the Formula 1 simulator at Red Bull's headquarters at Milton Keynes.
At the weekend, Hartley was third fastest in the two days of World Series Renault collective testing in Spain.
He set the pace for most of the weekend, only to spin off at his last attempt.
At the Motorland Aragon circuit, all the Formula Renault 3.5 Series teams tested on the last day using a new light aerodynamic configuration involving a smaller rear wing.
Estonian Sten Pentus (Fortec Motorsport), who was third in the New Zealand Grand Prix at Manfeild last month, was fastest ahead of another Red Bull junior driver, Jean-Eric Vergne (SG Formula).
Most of the eight venues used for the World Series Renault will be Formula 1 circuits and will be a part of the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in May.
The Renault series starts at Motorland Aragon in three weeks time. The other venues will be: Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Monte Carlo (Monaco), Brno (Czech), Magny-Cours (France), Hungaroring (Hungary), Hockenheim (Germany), Silverstone (England) and Catalunya (Spain).
