Over the last decade, Red Bull has supported great drivers but maybe, maybe, has finally found its true star: the Kiwi Brendon Hartley, 17. He's on top of the F-Renault Eurocup this year with Epsilon Euskadi team sponsored by Red Bull (three wins in six races) but it was his debut in F3 which caused a sensation. Replacing Sébastien Buemi (heading to GP2) in the Red Bull team Mücke Hartley qualified sixth and finished fourth in the F3 Masters at Zolder.

In New Zealand, Hartley ran since 13 years old and this is his fifth season at the wheel. Red Bull caught him at the end of 2005 and brought him to Europe, and he seems prepared to climb the ladder of Red Bull the most he can.

Seat of learn

redbull.com

As Sébastien and Jaime head back down to Jerez, the reserve drivers we share with Red Bull Racing sneaked into our factory for a seat fitting.

With the draconian restrictions on testing, it's hard to tell when Kiwi Brendon Hartley or Aussie Daniel Ricciardo will actually get to drive STR5, but when the time comes, at least they will be sitting comfortably, after going through the process of having seats made.

From the looks of this photo, it seems that Brendon is trying to make sure he gets first dibs at driving.

You'll have to get out of the cockpit at some point Brendon.

Red Bull Racing 2010: Brendon Hartley

redbullracing.com

Brendon Hartley, the world’s fastest Kiwi, is returning to Red Bull Racing in 2010, continuing his Formula One education with a second stint as our reserve driver.

The long, blonde mane might suggest Brendon has pretensions to being a moody indie guitarist. Actually, he’s usually in a good mood – though you may see him occasionally strumming a guitar. If he does have a bad-boy side, it’s mostly restricted to pilfering hotel shampoo, otherwise he’s usually to be found dutifully studying racecraft and taking copious notes in the garage.

Bought up in a racing household, Brendon began competing in karts at an early age before progressing to Formula Ford in his native New Zealand. After considerable success in this and other single-seaters, he packed his bags and headed for Europe where a solid run of points finishes in the 2006 Formula Renault Eurocup proved he acclimatises quickly. A move to the Epsilon Red Bull team for 2007 saw Brendon win the Eurocup Championship, taking four victories and a string of pole positions on his way to the title. It propelled him into a drive with Carlin Motorsport for 2008, racing in British Formula 3. Brendon secured five victories in that epic season, narrowly missing out on the title, which went to team-mate Jaime Alguersuari.

Having taken his Red Bull Racing bow on an F1 demonstration run through the streets of Riyadh, Brendon took the next step and was appointed the team’s test and reserve driver for 2009. He was immediately able to contribute to the development of the RB5, taking over winter testing duties while Mark Webber recovered from his cycling accident. Once the season began, Brendon spent time on the pit wall and in the garage.

There are many aspects to being a Formula One driver, which is something you gain an appreciation for when seeing it from the inside,” he says. “Last year I got to sit in on all the meetings, observe how the drivers work with their engineers, listen to the radio communications and attend the driver briefings. It gives you a really good feeling for how the drivers work within a team and how that relates to everything else. Every racing driver wants to race, but having an opportunity like this is a massive part of the apprenticeship – and it is going to make me a better competitor in the long run.”

Brendon is an important part of our team,” adds Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner. “Our reserve driver needs to have the same level of physical fitness and preparation as our race drivers, but also needs to possess the aptitude to learn from their environment and be ready for any eventuality. Brendon did a good job for us in 2009 and we’re delighted to play a continuing role in his development.”

In addition to making the tea for Red Bull Racing, Brendon will also be contesting the 2010 World Series by Renault for Tech 1 Racing alongside fellow Red Bull Junior team member Daniel Ricciardo.

Hartley to face tough competition in Renault 3.5 Series

nzracer.com

Coming off a year of mixed fortunes in 2009 Kiwi Brendon Hartley will be facing some difficult competition in the 2010 World Series by Renault. This season will see the current British F3 champion and runner up, competing as well as the 2009 Le Mans Series winner, 2009 Formula Renault 2.0 champ, the third driver for Lotus F1 Racing, the reserve driver for the Renault F1 team and the winner of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 in 2009.

As well as his duties as Red Bull F1 reserve driver it is reported that Hartley will only focus on racing in one competition in 2010, unlike the previous year. It could be said that this is a pivotal year and the strong field in the Renault series will be a place to shine, or fade.

With a month to go before the first collective testing sessions in Barcelona, the grid for the Formula Renault 3.5 Series is filling up. Many of the teams and drivers are already connected to Formula 1, and this season looks like being as hotly contested as previous ones.

March 4 and 5 will see the thirteen teams that make up the Formula Renault 3.5 Series meet up in Barcelona for the first track outing of the season. From there, on to Jerez (March 13-14) then to Motorland Aragón (March 26-27), where the sixth edition of World Series by Renault is set to kick off for real (April 16-18).

Already, there is a long list of contenders hoping to follow in the footsteps of Bertrand Baguette, winner of the 2009 championship under the stewardship of team International Draco Racing. The championship winning team, led by Adriano and Nadia Morini, is betting on the future now with two young drivers. With a year’s experience in the discipline already under his belt, 19-year old Colombian driver Julian Leal will pair with Formula Renault 2.0 2009 French champion, 20-year old Nathanaël Berthon. Recently selected by the FFSA for its French team, the French driver made a good impression on his first time out behind the wheel of a Formula Renault 3.5, last November.

P1 Motorsport and Tech 1 Racing have also completed their driver line-ups. Two newcomers to the discipline join the ranks of P1 Motorsport. These are British F3 2009 runner-up, Austrian Walter Grubmuller (Grubmuller competed in the inaugural Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand in 2005) who will be teaming up with Le Mans Series 2009 Champion, Jan Charouz. The Czech driver is a member of the brand new ‘’RF1 Driver Programme’’ and has just been signed up as reserve driver with Renault F1 Team. He too will be starting out in the series with the highest ambitions.

Exactly the same goes for the Tech 1 Racing pair. With Daniel Ricciardo, the British F3 2009 champion and Brendon Hartley, both picked by the Red Bull F1 Team to take turns as F1 reserve driver, Simon Abadie and his men will have their sights set on one goal: to bring home Team and Driver titles.

The connections between Formula Renault 3.5 Series and Formula 1 are increasingly tight. As an illustration of this, team MoFaz Racing, dear to 2009 runner-up Fairuz Fauzy, now third driver with Lotus F1 Racing, becomes “Lotus F1 Racing Junior Team” and will be running the same livery as the F1 team.

Albert Costa, winner of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 in 2009, will also be a driver to watch closely. The 19-year old Spaniard stays with Epsilon Euskadi, the team that helped him break into the limelight in Formula Renault 2.0.

Greg Mansell moves to Comtec Racing for his second season in the discipline, which he will be racing in parallel with an endurance campaign, which he is set to take on with none other than... Mansell senior. Federico Leo is also racing his second season with Pons Racing.

Carlin Motorsport, Fortec Motorsports, Interwetten.com Racing and SG Formula should be announcing their line-ups in the approach to the first testing sessions.

Meanwhile, newcomers ISR and KMP Group are preparing to compete for the first time in Formula Renault 3.5 Series. In the case of the Czech team, ISR, Filip Salaquardra has been confirmed for one of the seats, as has Russian driver Anton Nebilitkiy over at KMP Racing.
